Muskegon, Michigan

Muskegon, Michigan, is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, 42 miles (68 kilometers) northwest of Grand Rapids. It is the county seat of Muskegon County, and is home to 40,105 people.

To brush up on local history, visit the Muskegon County Museum to view artifacts ranging from Native American relics to lumber tools and household items, along with a fine natural science collection. Also check out the Fire Barn Museum, which gives great insight into the community's firefighting history.

When the snow starts to fall, head to the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex for cross-country skiing, luge, skating, and special events and races.

Residents also have access to a number of beautiful state parks. Head to Duck Lake for fantastic boating, fishing, and hunting; the Hart-Montague Trail for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling; Hoffmaster for swimming and beach activities; or the Muskegon State Park for outstanding wildlife viewing. Another spectacular outdoor destination is Pere Marquette State Park, the largest state park in Illinois, and home to a variety of recreational activities.
