Though when people think of Nebraska, they often think of the frontier, Boys' Town (immortalized in the 1938 movie starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney), and the TV show Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. Well, Nebraska has far more than that!

This landlocked state of 1,739,291 inhabitants is made up of prairies, hills and bluffs, small lakes, and racing whitewater rivers. While many early pioneers crossed the continent during the gold rush, many remained in Nebraska, and established farms and ranches. Today one of the state's major economic bases is still agriculture. No wonder it's known as the Cornhusker State. Its economy is also active in manufacturing, telecommunications, and financial services.

Nebraska is a 4-season state, and with very cold – and often blizzardy winters – and summers that can be extremely hot (particularly in the south and east), and during this season residents can expect thunderstorms – and even tornadoes.

Wide-ranging weather allows for wide-ranging outdoor activities. You can enjoy canoeing, windsurfing, water skiing, horseback riding, hiking, hunting, and fishing.

There are also many ways to keep your children occupied and entertained in Nebraska. The dinosaur-loving little ones will enjoy exploring the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park in Royal, which contains the bones of 10-million-year-old mammals including mastodons, mammoths, and rhinos that died at a watering hole during a volcanic eruption. And while you're at it, take the kids to the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in Harrison, which includes mammalian fossils and artifacts of the original Native American inhabitants of the area. Perhaps your kids like live animals? Take them to the world-class Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.

Or maybe you're all interested in history? Visit Harold Warp's Pioneer Village in Minden (which includes 19th century buildings and artifacts) or Fort Robinson State Park (Nebraska's largest and most historic state park, which was an active military post from 1874 to 1948). You can also take them to North Platte to visit the home of William F. Cody, aka Buffalo Bill, the famous buffalo hunter, scout, and creator of the Wild West Show.
