Needham, Massachusetts

The town of Needham is located in eastern Massachusetts, just 12 miles (19 kilometers) southwest of Boston. It is part of Norfolk County, and has a current population of 28,911.

First settled in 1680 and incorporated in 1711, Needham has a very long and interesting history. To learn more about the town's past and its notable residents, visit the Needham Historical Society, which offers exhibits and special programs. Another of the town's cultural highlights is the Needham Community Theatre, a non-profit group that produces a play each spring and a musical in the fall. The Community Theatre has been entertaining local audiences for 50 years, and welcomes anyone with "an interest in music, theatre, and community service" to join.

For some outdoor recreation, head to the Ridge Hill Reservation. This site features a historic 1906 home which can be rented for private functions, and more than 300 acres (121 hectares) of grounds. An extensive network of trails cover the reservation, and provide outstanding opportunities for cross-country skiing, hiking, and horseback riding. Needham is also a great starting point for exploring the many state parks of northeast Massachusetts. You can enjoy boating, fishing, and watersports at Cochituate State Park, admire spectacular views of the seacoast at Halibut Point State Park, and explore the many trails that wind through the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough State Forest.
