Neenah, Wisconsin

Neenah is a city located in central Wisconsin two miles (three kilometers) south of Menasha, 13 miles (21 kilometers) north of Oshkosh, and 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Milwaukee. It is part of Winnebago County, and is home to 24,507 people.

The community's name comes from the Winnebago word for "water," which is appropriate, since Neenah is located on the Fox River and along the northwestern shore of Lake Winnebago. Neenah was incorporated in 1873, and you can still see some historic mansions once owned by the area's paper barons when you stroll through downtown. To learn more about the city's past, pay a visit to Doty Cabin, the former home of Wisconsin's second governor, or the Velte History Room, which features exhibits on Native American history and the lives of early pioneers.

The Bergstrom-Mahler Museum is one of Neenah's top cultural attractions, and contains exquisite collection of glassware from different centuries, including one of the world's collections of glass paperweights. The museum also hosts regular traveling exhibits along with a variety of classes and events.

To see some works of art created by Mother Nature, visit the Jayem Gallery and its fine displays of gems and minerals. Want to see more? The Weis Earth Science Museum is only five miles (eight kilometers) away. Operated by the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley in Menasha, this is the official mineralogical museum of Wisconsin, and its interactive exhibits allow visitors to create earthquakes, touch dinosaur bones, and even move continents. To complete your day in Menasha, try a visit to the Barlow Planetarium or catch a play by the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley theater department.

Love sports and the outdoors? Neenah's Parks and Recreation Department is sure to satisfy your every need! The city offers 367 acres (hectares) of park land, two boat launches, a pool complex, and a skate park, along with facilities for tennis, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, archery, and other activities. The Tri-County Ice Arena offers excellent rinks for hockey and skating, and the Winagamie Golf Course offers 27 holes of fun for golfers.

Outside the city, you can learn about the area's ecosystems at the Heckrodt Wetland Reserve and exploring the many trails that make up the Fox Cities Greenways. Lake Winnebago covers 137,000 acres (hectare), and provides a huge playground for fishing and boating enthusiasts. High Cliff State Park is located on the lake's shores, and features towering limestone cliffs and Native American effigy mounds.
