New Castle, founded in 1651, is a quaint colonial village located on the Delaware River. Although small in population (approximately 26,309), residents and visitors experience pieces of living history on every street corner. The cobblestone streets and the architecture reflect the spirit of those who settled the town, as well as the pride of those who live there today. Residents and visitors can experience all of the town's history during A Day in Old New Castle, an annual tour of New Castle's homes and gardens held on the third Saturday in May. Unlike so many other historical towns and villages, reconstructed for the pageantry of tourism, New Castle is a truly living old town. One of the community's most noted attractions is The Read House and Gardens. The home was built in 1801 by George Read II, whose father was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. On Delaware Street, Old World charm meets meet New World chic. Lined with quaint shops, restaurants, and taverns, New Castle's main street serves up its 17th-century heritage with all the comfort and convenience you would expect from a thriving 21st-century community. Fine Dining in New Castle County is among the country's best, and since Delaware has no sales tax, an afternoon of shopping won't be taxing on the pocketbook! Looking for outdoor activity? Look no further! For those who crave outdoor recreation there is the New Castle Sailing Club. As well, Battery Park, located on the Delaware River, offers 2.5 miles (four kilometers) of riverfront trail, as well as plenty of room for a picnic lunch and an afternoon of touch football. There are also nearby state parks offering opportunities for exploration and recreation. Fort Delaware State Park is located in Delaware City, nine miles (15.5 kilometers) south of New Castle. The fortress dates back to 1859, and once served as a prison for Confederate prisoners of war. Lums Pond State Park in Bear, is six miles (9.6 kilometers) south of New Castle, and offers fishing, camping, boating and more! For those interested in the arts, Wilmington, New Castle's neighbor to the north, will provide an evening of theater, symphony, opera, and ballet. And The Grand Opera plays host to comedians, musicians, orchestras, ballets, and regular classic movie nights. Three Little Bakers Dinner Theatre offers evenings of buffet dining coupled with Broadway musicals and celebrity events. If the roar of overwhelming horsepower is more your style, New Castle is within an hour's drive of the Dover International Speedway – also known to many NASCAR fans as the "Monster Mile" – in Dover. In 1651, New Castle's settlers were looking to establish a community with a wealth of opportunities in which to root their futures. Today's New Castle continues with these offerings, bolstered by the traditions of its settlers. Come to New Castle and experience Colonial America in the 21st century!
