As the centre of Nova Scotia's Scottish heritage, the rhythms and colors of Gaelic culture are still very much alive, giving the town an energy and spirit that enrich life. The first Scottish settlers in Nova Scotia landed in the New Glasgow area in 1773 on the ship Hector. Throughout the year, the people of the region pay tribute to their Scottish heritage with a number of festivals. In August, New Glasgow bustles as it hosts the Festival of the Tartans. A highland games tournament is the highlight of the festival, where people compete at activities, such as tossing the caber, hammer throws and stone tosses. During the festival, of course, kilts are the hot fashion item. There's even a golf tournament with players wearing the traditional garb! In the nearby town of Pictou, residents take their Scottish heritage even more seriously. During the annual Hector Festival, they reenact the landing of the first settlers on the famous ship. The past really does come alive as festival goers learn how to tie whippings and wormings and traditional Gaelic dances and songs. Besides culture, there's plenty more to do in New Glasgow. The beaches along the Northumberland Strait offer beautiful walks and swimming during summer months. In the town itself, walk under the light of Victorian-style lamps in the city's newly revitalized downtown area. While you'll love the unique items found in the area's independently owned stores, you can also find more mainstream shopping at the town's two malls, Highland Square Mall and Aberdeen Shopping Center. The town's waterfront area is another busy hub. There, you'll find people out for an evening stroll along the wooded Samson Trail or boating on the beautiful East River. Businesses have long been attracted by New Glasgow's high quality of life. Most recently, Convergys and the ICT call center have brought information technology jobs to the area. They have helped diversify the economy in an area where manufacturing companies such as Kimberly-Clark, Michelin, and Maritime Steel have long played a strong role. Come experience the opportunity, beauty, and culture that make New Glasgow an irresistible delight. As you hear the bagpipes in the distance, you'll be glad you did.
