Situated on Long Island Sound, between New York City and Boston, New Haven combines beautiful colonial buildings with a distinctly academic environment. Indeed, this city, which was established in the early 17th century, is probably best known as the home of Yale University. And it is the university that in part gives New Haven a vibrant, cosmopolitan feel not always seen in a city of its size (123,626). Founded by English Puritans, this city is now home to a variety of ethnic groups. So in addition to restaurants like Judies, Miso, and the Union League, which rival those found in any major city, there are plenty of small ethnic restaurants providing everything from Italian to Jewish to Caribbean to German to Asian fare. And shopping opportunities range from department stores (like Macy's) to tiny bohemian clothing shops to boutiques in the city center. New Haven offers a variety of exciting neighborhoods: from the university neighborhood of East Rock to the always-hip Fair Haven to the exclusive Prospect Hill. The city boasts a variety of green space and trees, which has garnered it the nickname Elm City. Some New Haven trivia? It is claimed (and, according to Louis's grandson, properly notarized) that hamburgers were first served at Louis' Lunch Wagon in 1900 – although people in Wisconsin, Ohio, Texas, and Kansas, who each have their own hamburger claim to fame, may dispute that. New Haven also claims to be the birthplace of the Frisbee™ (thanks to a bored Yale student and an empty Frisbie pie tin) and the lollipop. Are these true? Maybe, maybe not ... but it sure adds a bit of character to the local history. From its distinguished ivy-league university to its cosmopolitan lifestyle, you'll be happy to call this impressive city home.
