Newport, Arkansas

The city of Newport is located in northeastern Arkansas, 44 miles (71 kilometers) southwest of Jonesboro and 91 miles (147 kilometers) northeast of Little Rock. It is the seat of Jackson County, and is home to 7,811 people.

Local attractions include the 1902 Iron Mountain Depot, Arnett's Doll Museum, and the Jackson's Funeral Home Museum. Arkansas State University-Newport is one of the community's cultural hubs, and hosts music, art, and lecture series throughout the year. Portfest "Rollin' on the River" Festival, Depot Days, and other annual festivals celebrate the city's culture and heritage.

Jacksonport State Park is located only a few minutes away. Jacksonport was the county seat from 1854 to 1891, when Newport became the new seat of county government. Here visitors can tour the 1872 courthouse, and climb aboard the restored Mary Woods No. 2 sternwheeler paddleboat, and learn about the history of the city's riverport.

Newport is home to nine public parks, with a combined are of 59 acres (24 hectares). Facilities include sports fields, tennis courts, and playgrounds. Newport Lake is a great spot for boating and fishing, as well as lakeside picnics. Hunting enthusiasts will have the chance to track deer, rabbit, turkey, and a variety of other game. For an outdoor escape, visit the Shirey Bay-Rainey Brake Wildlife Management Area or any of a number of state parks located within an hour's drive of the city.
