Newport, the county seat of Newport County, Rhode Island, lies on the southern end of Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay. Newport was first settled in 1639. At one time a trading post for rum, molasses, and slaves, the city became a popular resort for America's nouveau riche during the so-called "Gilded Age" towards the end of the 19th century. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and important markets such as Boston (71 miles, or 114 kilometers, to the north) and New York (180 miles, or 290 kilometers, to the southeast) have always helped to drive Newport's economy. Today, the city also draws on tourism. In fact, Newport has more original colonial period buildings than any other America city and has been named one of the "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It's no surprise then, that Newport has a number of museums – although not all of them are dedicated to its history. Newport is home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which is housed in the Newport Casino, which is on the site of the first US National Championship in 1881. And, as the "Sailing Capital of America, Newport is also home to the Museum of Yachting. Other museums of interest include the Brick Market Museum of Newport History and the Newport Art Museum. Newport hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. Among the more notable are the Newport Winter Festival, held every February, and the Newport Folk Festival held in August. Music lovers will also want to check out the Newport Music Festival, held every July. And when the proverbial music is over, there are always Newport's first class restaurants and vibrant pubs available to continue the fun. Getting outdoors and enjoying Newport is easy. A walk around the city is a walk through history, and it is also a chance to see the mansions and villas once tied to names like Vanderbilt, Astor, and Belmont. As well, Fort Adams State Park is located at the mouth of Newport Harbor and provides visitors with 105 acres (42 hectares) of parkland and picnic areas. Visitors can also fish and swim. And Easton's Beach is also nearby. See our 4 Jobs in Newport, Rhode Island Websites for this CityGovernment:
