The city of Northampton lies on the banks of the Connecticut River, in the Springfield metropolitan area. Northampton's history dates back to 1654, when settlers from nearby Springfield established the town. The city wasn't incorporated until 1883, but since then has acted as a regional center for commerce and the arts. Indeed, the community was rated the top small arts town in the third edition of John Villani's popular The 100 Best Small Arts Towns in America. Those interested in learning more about Northampton's rich history will want to visit the museum at Historic Northampton. Every September, Northampton hosts the Three County Fair, the longest consecutive running agricultural fair in America. The Paradise City Arts Festival, held in May, is also popular, and draws thousands of art lovers from across the state to the city. The presence of Smith College, the largest, and one of the oldest women's colleges in America, has also contributed to the city's distinctive flair. Smith was the first college to grant women its own degrees in engineering. It's also the site of the first women's basketball game (1892). The college's botanic garden is a popular spot for weddings (and wedding pictures) and for those just looking to relax in the sun. Nestled in one of the greenest areas of the state, Northampton is also ideal for lovers of the outdoors. The city's Frank Newhall Look Memorial Park, covers more than 150 acres (61 hectares) of forest and parkland, and nearby Connecticut River Greenway State Park offers a number of trails for hiking, as well as sites for camping and fishing. The Norwottuck Rail Trail passes through the park, and its paved surface is excellent bicyclists, roller-bladers, and hikers alike.
