Novato, California

Novato is the northernmost city in Marin County, California. It's located along San Pablo Bay, 11 miles north of San Rafael, and 29 miles (47 kilometers) north (and across the Golden Gate Bridge) of San Francisco. Novato's economy is varied, and includes several corporate headquarters (e.g. the USA headquarters of Birkenstock), as well as the Bucks Institute for Age Research.

Novato has an active downtown shopping district, and of the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center with more than 50 stores.

Community events around the city include the Festival of Art, Wine, & Music and the Trade Feast, as well as summer farmers' markets.

Those interested in area history can visit Marin Museum of the American Indian, or Olompali State Historical Park, which has exhibits concerning the area's original Miwok people, as well as hiking and riding trails.

There is plenty to do outdoors in and around Novato. The city has 27 parks with more than 3,600 acres (1,457 hectares) of open space that's great for hiking and mountain biking. Head out to Mt. Burdell Open Space Preserve, and take in the views of the city and area from Mt. Burdell, which is 1,558 feet (475 meters) high. Or drive a mere three miles (5 kilometers) to Stafford Lake Park to enjoy a day along the water. And to name just two nearby out-of-town locations, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west, you'll find both Point Reyes National Seashore and Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
