Beautiful scenery; friendly, down-to-earth people; fascinating history; and small-town charm. Nova Scotia can offer you all of this. You can drive the length of Nova Scotia in less than a day and still never more than 30 minutes from a magnificent seacoast or a sandy beach. They don't call Nova Scotia Canada's Ocean Playground for nothing! If you like bird or whale watching, the Bay of Fundy area has some of Canada's greatest concentrations of marine wildlife. On the south shore, boat building and seafaring are still integral parts of daily life. The capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax, is a modern port city that houses one-third of the province's population of 908,007 people. Founded in 1749, Halifax became a major naval station for the British Empire, and, blessed with sandy beaches and rugged shorelines, the city was the site of the first British town in Canada. The entire Halifax region has a spectacular array of entertainment, museums, galleries, historic sites, fine restaurants, colorful gardens and lively nightlife. A great deal of the nightlife is fueled by the six major universities in the Halifax area, one of which is one of the top universities in Canada and North America, Dalhousie University. The Annapolis Basin is a body of sheltered water off the Bay of Fundy. The area is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and dotted with many historic sites and small towns and villages and has the most temperate climate in Eastern Canada. There is something for everyone here from fly-fishing to whale watching to antiqueing to simply relaxing and watching the tide. Another popular place is Cape Breton Island. If you are interested in Scottish and Gaelic culture, you're unlikely to find a richer area outside of Scotland itself. Considered Nova Scotia's Masterpiece, Cape Breton Island has been named one of "50 places of a lifetime" by National Geographic Traveler magazine. If you are into hiking and camping, then you should check out the Cabot Trail. The trail is 298-kilometers (185-miles) long and loops through the northern tip of the Cape Breton Highlands. The largest city in Cape Breton, and third largest in Nova Scotia, is Sydney with a population of 33,913 people. See our 34 Jobs in Nova Scotia Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say?
