Oak Harbor, Washington

Oak Harbor, a community of 19,795, is located on the northern part of Whidbey Island, in the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Oak Harbor is the largest city in Island County, Washington, and is located just south and west of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Whidbey Island has ferry connections to communities on both sides of Puget Sound, and is connected by bridge to Fidalgo Island and the mainland.

The bridge between the islands, the Deception Pass Bridge, is in the midst of Deception Pass State Park. This 4,134-acre (1,673-hectare) marine and camping park has 77,000 feet (23,470 meters) of saltwater shoreline, as well as 33,900 feet (10,333 meters) of freshwater shoreline on three lakes, and miles of trails. Deception Pass State Park is less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of town, while less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) south is Fort Ebey State Park, which encompasses 645 acres (261 hectares) and was originally developed as a coastal defense in World War II. Off the island, there are a wide range of places to visit within an easy drive, including Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park, Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, and Wenatchee National Forest. And, of course, the waters around Oak Harbor are great for boating, fishing, diving, and whale-watching.

In town entertainment is varied, and includes community theater, one of the last four drive-in theaters in the state (which allows you to "drive in" more ways than one, because it also has a go-cart track!), and several festivals, including Holland Happening, which celebrates the area's early Dutch settlers.
