Oconomowoc, Wisconsin

Oconomowoc is a city located in southern Wisconsin, 18 miles (29 kilometers) northwest of Waukesha and 34 miles (55 kilometers) west of Milwaukee. It is part of Waukesha County, and is home to 12,382 residents.

The community is located on the bank of the Oconomowoc River, and its name comes from an Algonquin word for "beaver dam" or "waterfall." You can learn more about the past at the Lake Country Museum, which features reproductions of the general store, barbershop, doctor's office, and other businesses that once lined the streets of Old Oconomowoc. Oconomowoc also offers many family-friendly events, including free shows by the Badgerland Water Ski Show Team, a weekly farmers' market, outdoor concerts, and street dances. The Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts is one of the largest events of the year, and features a juried art competition, vendor booths, and live performances.

Oconomowoc boasts 33 parks, six golf courses, and a YMCA, and the lakes and woodlands surrounding the city also offer ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Olympia Sports Center offers excellent golf, tennis, and racquet ball facilities in the summer, and fantastic downhill skiing and snowboarding in the winter. The Southern Kettle Morain State Forest covers 21,000 acres (8,498 hectares), and is a great place for fishing, hunting, and camping. Two lakes and beaches are available for swimming and boating, while an extensive trail system can be used for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. Other popular outdoor destinations include Nashotah Park, Lapham Peak State Park, and the Glacial Drumlin Trail.
