Orange City, Florida

For a break from the Florida stereotype of outlet malls and buffet palaces, check out Orange City. A small town located between Orlando and Daytona Beach, the area is a haven for nature lovers and has a quirky new-age side for those looking for something a bit different.

Although a fast-growing community of 6,604, Orange City is working hard to maintain its small-town values. With strong regulations on new developments, the town has ensured that they are architecturally pleasing and fit within Orange City's existing design. While newer big-box stores are beginning to pop up, older establishments continue to thrive.

The area's small-town feel is reinforced by the surrounding beautiful outdoor spaces. Eco-enthusiasts will appreciate Blue Spring State Park, a refuge for the rare manatee. Or they may spot endangered species such as the American alligator, the eastern indigo snake, and the bald eagle along the St. Johns River, a shallow, historic waterway that meanders through town. Thick with oak hammock stands and lined with cypress trees, the river area perfectly reflects the south's traditional image of slow-moving rivers and murky lagoons. It is a breeding ground for a rich variety of fish, including trophy bass, strippers, shellcrackers, and speckled perch, all of which make for a fine dining experience!

Residents practice spiritual healing at the beautiful Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, located in nearby Cassadaga. Having had a positive relationship with the local community since 1894, the camp has long added a unique flavor to the local culture.

While still largely a bedroom community for the booming areas of Orlando and Daytona Beach, Orange City offers its own attractive type of community – one that includes low housing prices, natural amenities, and an abundance of hi-tech jobs.
