Just a jump away from big-city amenities but with the look and feel of a small town, Orangeville has plenty to offer. Located 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Toronto, the town is close to major highways into the city and is a quick drive to Toronto's major international airport, Toronto Pearson Airport. While that means you'll have easy access to Toronto's booming job market, dazzling theater scene, and eclectic shopping, Orangeville can still hold its own. There are two major auto plants in the surrounding communities, while the town itself boasts major retailers in its power center district and distinct independently owned stores in its historic downtown area. The excellent views are a big part of what attracts so many people here. The town's settlement dates back to the early 1800s, leaving it a legacy of heritage buildings dating back to 1875. Natural views are another big attraction. The area is home to the headwaters of four major Ontario rivers and the spectacular Bruce Trail, a 800-kilometer (497-mile) path along the Niagara Escarpment, passes through the town. Hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing, canoeing, and horseback riding are just a few of the ways to enjoy the outdoors and stay fit. For luxurious recreation, check out nearby Hockley Valley Resort. Hit the slopes on your skis or snowboard, discover snow soccer, and scan the skyline on a hot air balloon ride. At the end of the day, don't forget to indulge in one of the resort's lavish spa treatments. Orangeville's scenery has long attracted and inspired creative people, giving the town a vibrancy only the arts can bring about. Theatre Orangeville, located in the restored Opera Hall, host plays throughout the year. There are also many opportunities to experience the arts for free – in the summer, the whole town becomes one big concert hall during the Buskers Day Founders Festival. The biggest event, though, is the Headwaters Arts Festival in the Hills. A 17-day arts extravaganza throughout Orangeville and the surrounding towns and villages, the festival features art auctions, studio tours, gallery shows, and musical performances. With all of these attractions and facilities, plus housing prices much lower than in the Toronto area, it's no wonder that Orangeville's population has increased by almost 50% in the last 10 years!
