Ormond Beach, Florida

Have a need for speed? Car enthusiasts will think they've died and gone to heaven in Ormond Beach – and their significant others will be pleased to know that the city is quiet and rev-free.

The Birthplace of Speed doesn't host racing anymore, but back in the early 1900s this was where Ford, Chevrolet and other early car makers tested out their machines. At that time, the hard-packed sand of Ormond Beach was one of the few reliable flat tracks in the country, resulting in several early speed records being set here. Today the engines roar in nearby (but out of earshot) Daytona Beach at the Daytona International Speedway, which is especially famous for its NASCAR races. Speaking of excitement, because Ormond Beach is in the north part of the Daytona Beach Area, you are just a hop, skip, and a jump away from all the water sports, shopping, restaurants, and nightclubs of vibrant downtown Daytona.

But in Ormond Beach, you can just as easily avoid the excitement and noise, as the city's population of 36,301 creates a small-town feel. Ormond Beach has long been a popular retreat (John D. Rockefeller even owned a vacation home here) and is now an affordable retirement spot. Residents can stroll along the Daytona Beach Area's 23 miles (37 kilometers) of white sandy beaches or tour the lovely beachfront parks. Or they can take in a round of golf at one of a dozen beautiful golf courses in the area. Alternatively, The Tomoka State Park, located right in Ormond Beach near the confluence of the Tomoka and Halifax rivers, is an excellent spot for nature lovers and offers camping, canoeing, boating, fishing, bird watching, and hiking. Here, you even have the opportunity to see Manatees, Bottlenose dolphin, and American alligators.

High speed or slow paced, Ormond Beach offers you both.
