Home to General Motors, Oshawa is commonly known as both Canada's Engine of Growth and the City in Motion. Serving as a bedroom community to Toronto while maintaining an individual identity, it is a city on the move. Incorporated in 1850, Oshawa was named by local Indians of the Mississauga Tribe as the "point at the crossing of the stream where the canoe is exchanged for the trail." It was and is a strong point for cross-border shipping and transportation. Located on Lake Ontario, approximately 45 minutes outside of Toronto's city center, Oshawa is at the heart of Durham region. It provides the best of small-town living with easy access to the hustle and bustle of urban pursuits. In Oshawa, property prices are significantly less expensive than in Toronto, free parking is abundantly available, and parkland abounds. Residents enjoy everything from yachting to long walks by the lake to shopping at the Oshawa Centre to dining at fine restaurants (try Fazio's!). Despite being part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), the E.P. Taylor thoroughbred operations of northern Oshawa (who have bred more winning horses than any other) provide testament to the availability of outdoor space. With city development tied strongly to Robert McLaughlin's General Motors initiative, many cultural activities in Oshawa are associated with the McLaughlin family: The Robert McLaughlin Gallery houses more than 3,000 Canadian art masterpieces; in the summer months various performances occur at the McLaughlin Bandshell; Parkwood Estate (an early residence of the McLaughlins) provides a window into the historic architecture and life of early Oshawa. In the summertime, a week-long festival called Fiesta celebrates multiculturalism in Oshawa with a parade, concert, and picnic as well as international food. Close proximity to Toronto allows easy access to the other entertainment including the Hummingbird Centre, the Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra theatres, Massey Hall and Roy Thompson Hall, Air Canada Centre, the Rogers Centre (formerly the SkyDome), and more.
