Pennsylvania is a very wide state that stretches from one-hour inland from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Lake Erie. Pennsylvania's two major cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, are more than five hours apart (by car) and are very different. Philadelphia is a very east-coast city, almost a mini New York. With wonderful museums, theater, symphony, and major league sports (the Flyers, Sixers, Phillies, and Eagles). Philadelphia has everything NY has to offer without the crowds. If you are into college basketball, Philadelphia is the place to be with the Big Five college basketball teams of Temple, Villanova, LaSalle, St. Joseph's, and the University of Pennsylvania. There are actually more universities in Philadelphia than in Boston. In the 18th century, the Founding Fathers wandered the streets of Philadelphia, gave birth to the country, and left behind wonderful historic tourist attractions including Independence Hall and the home of Betsy Ross, seamstress of the original Stars and Stripes flag. Today, the city's downtown area is still located between the Delaware and the Schuylkill rivers, and Boathouse Row is home to a very active rowing community. Pittsburgh has a more Midwestern feel (although locals get very defensive when their eastern statesmen mention it). This city of around 334,563 people is often called "one of the most livable cities in American" because of its easygoing hometown feel. The locals cheer for the Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers, and have great riverfront stadiums to make the watching even better. There is also wonderful culture including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, the Pittsburgh Opera, and the Andy Warhol Museum. Pittsburgh is also home to Heinz ketchup and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. The middle of the state is also very diverse. You can ski and hike in the Pocono Mountains, enjoy capital-area attractions in Harrisburg, and enjoy a visit to the town famous for chocolate: Hershey.
