Pangnirtung, Nunavut

Have you ever played baseball at midnight? The residents of Pangnirtung (often referred to as Pang) do it every summer … without having to use floodlights. It's just one of the advantages of living in the land of the midnight sun, where you can experience 24 hours of daylight during the summer.

Sports are big in Pangnirtung any time of year. There's a hockey game every night in the town's Aksayuk Arena. The Attagoyuk Ilisavik School gym, where volleyball, soccer, badminton, and basketball games are played, is open five nights a week. Visit the town center on the weekend and you're sure to find a dance or a fast game of Ping-Pong taking place. If the weather's nice, you'll see people out on snowmobiles, snowboards, and cross-country skis. While Pang may be remote, it certainly isn't boring.

Pang is the main entry point to Nunavut's northermost accessible national park, Auyuittuq National Park, which is located an hour north of the town and is accessible by boat through the fiord north of Pang. Penny Ice Cap, which is a year-round water source for the park's plants and wildlife, is at the heart of the park. The spectacular mountains and extensive ice fields are a perfect example of Arctic beauty, and rock climbing, skiing, and hiking are popular activities here.

While the scenery is majestic, the artwork produced in Pang is delightful. You can find excellent handmade clothing, carvings, and tapestries in the Uqqurmiut Centre. The most popular item is the Pang hat, a crocheted toque famous throughout the north.

With plenty of Arctic beauty to explore, Pang showcases the best of Canada's great white north.
