The City of Peabody is located in northeastern Massachusetts, just 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Boston. It is part of Essex County, and home to 48,129 residents. The city was named after philanthropist George Peabody, and was once a major leather-producing center with over 100 tanneries. Today, Peabody is home to a revitalized downtown, thriving businesses in its Centennial Industrial Park, and retail centers like the North Shore Mall. Like most of Massachusetts, Peabody is a community rich in history. A number of heritage homes and sites are maintained by the Peabody Historical Society. Visit the General Gideon Foster House to see 19th century furnishings, clothing, military artifacts, and toys, along with special displays related to the city's past. Other attractions include the Historical Fire Museum, a rustic barn, the Felton-Smith Historic Site and its Woodland Garden. Looking for more? Remember that you're only a short drive away from all the cultural delights of Boston and the region's many historic and diverse communities.
