Pembroke, Ontario

Pembroke is a city of 13,490 in eastern Ontario, about 148 kilometers (92 miles) northwest of Ottawa and 410 kilometers (255 miles) northeast of Toronto. The city is situated along the mighty Ottawa River, and in the beautiful Ottawa Valley.

Pembroke's Waterfront is one of the city's star attractions. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the Millenium Boardwalk, and enjoy a free performance every summer evening at the Riverwalk Amphitheatre. Other great Waterfront destinations include the Pembroke Marina and Riverside Park, which offers mini-golf, outdoor sports facilities, and campgrounds. Linking these two sites are the Kiwanis Waterfront Trails, which offer residents 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) of trails for walking, cycling, or running. To learn more about local history, you only need to take a good look around! The city has commissioned more than 20 Heritage Murals, each depicting an important aspect of the city's history or culture.

For a taste of pioneer life in the 1800s and early 1900s, visit the Champlain Trail Museum. Attractions include a circa 1838 school house, a log pioneer home, a steam engine, and many artifacts including a replica of Champlain's astrolabe.

The Ottawa Valley encompasses 2.4 million hectares (six million acres) of wilderness, while the Ottawa River has 500 kilometers (311 miles) of waterways, offering visitors great kayaking, canoeing, and world-class whitewater rafting. Be sure to visit the renowned Algonquin Provincial Park, which offers fantastic hiking, fishing, and nature-viewing opportunities, as well as a welcome escape from city life. Bonnechere Provincial Park, and the stalactites and ancient marine fossils in the Bonnechere Caves are also must-see sights for any nature lover.

Those who prefer to fall into a comfy bed after a day of outdoor fun should check out the Logos Land Resort. This four season resort offers skiing, sliding, and skating in winter; waterslides in summer; and horseback riding and hiking in the fall.

Pembroke is home to a lively arts scene, with the Stone Fence Theatre providing musical theater productions, up-and-coming indie bands, and great musical festivals. The Valley Festival is a wonderful classical music concert series that takes place in communities across the Ottawa Valley, while Pembrook's own "Old Time Fiddling and Step Dancing Festival" attracts thousands of visitors each year.
