Penticton, British Columbia

Penticton is located at the heart of the Okanagan Valley's rich farmlands and situated approximately 400 kilometers (248 miles) east of Vancouver and 68 km (43 miles) south of Kelowna. It was first settled by Europeans in 1865, and now has a population of about 30,985.

Penticton is located in a semi-arid desert area and is rated as one of the least severe climates in Canada by Environment Canada – average temperatures in the area range from -2C (28F) in the winter to 20C (68F) in the summer. The climate means that vineyards, orchards, and farmland take up much of the area land. Many of the local wineries allow visitors to sample their products, and restaurants promote local produce prepared in new and exciting ways. In particular, interested gourmands should visit Theo's – recently ranked Restaurant of the Year in British Columbia.

Outdoor sport is never very far off. Golfers will be pleased to know that many courses are open year-round. And Okanagan Lake attracts numerous visitors to the area – not only for recreation – but to search of the legendary monster, Ogopogo. In the winter months, skiing is available at nearby Apex Mountain Resort.

In the Salish Indian language, Penticton's name means "a place to live forever" – a name that seems very apt.
