Peoria, Illinois

Peoria is located in central Illinois, 125 miles (201 kilometers) southwest of Chicago and 150 miles (241 kilometers) northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. It is the county seat of Peoria County, and home to 112,936 residents.

The city is situated on the Illinois River, and its Riverfront offers beautiful parks and gardens, fantastic shopping, fine dining, and even horse-drawn carriage rides. Many arts and cultural venues are also located here, including the Contemporary Art Center and the Peoria Civic Center, home of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and other performing arts groups. The Riverfront also offers a marina, walking/biking trails, and many sports and recreational facilities at the RiverPlex. Scheduled for completion in 2009, the Peoria Museum Square will make the Riverfront even more vibrant by adding interactive displays, theaters, galleries, and ever-changing exhibits.

Looking for more local culture? The Prairie Cabaret Theatre, the Corn Stock Theatre, and the Peoria Players Theatre offer dramas, comedies, and musicals each season. Other local attractions include the Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences, the African American Hall of Fame, the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame, and the Glen Oak Zoo.

The Peoria Park District is one of the largest and oldest park districts in Illinois, and has been awarded the gold medal twice by the National Recreation and Park Association. The Park District oversees almost 9,000 acres (3,642 hectares) of land in Peoria and the surrounding areas, and offers a wide variety of sports and recreational programs. Other great outdoor destinations include the Forest Park Nature Center, which offers a natural history museum, bird watching room, and miles of hiking trails, and the George Luthy Memorial Botanical Garden, which offers five acres (two hectares) of beautifully landscaped grounds that provide a welcome escape from the stress of city life.

A vibrant community that offers something for every resident, Peoria is a great choice for your next home!
