Petersburg, Virginia

Petersburg is located in southern Virginia, 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of the state capital of Richmond and 77 miles (124 kilometers) northwest of Norfolk. Petersburg is an independent city, and is home to 33,740 residents.

During the Civil War, Petersburg was an important supply depot for Richmond, and became the site of a nine-month-long siege spanning 1864 and 1865. The Petersburg National Battlefield contains 13 historic fighting grounds and sites, along with visitor centers, exhibits, and living history demonstrations. The Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is another popular attraction. The park is located on the site of the famous "Breakthrough" battle of April 2, 1865, which ended the Petersburg Campaign and led to the evacuation of Richmond. You'll find plenty of information and fun in the park's four museums, four antebellum homes, living history venues, shops, and restaurants. Other heritage attractions include the 1735 Blandford Church and the Centre Hill Museum. The US Army Quartermaster Museum is located just seven miles (11 kilometers) east of Petersburg, and features more than 23,000 artifacts related to the history of the Quartermaster Corps. Created in 1775, the Quartermaster Corps is responsible for a variety of support duties, including food and water, identification and burial of the dead, and airdropping supplies.
