Pickering has grown exponentially in recent years with waves of families coming to take advantage of its amenities. Its population has now reached about 87,139. The city has managed to attract an array of ethnic groups, giving it an ethnic diversity to rival other big cities. Despite growing so fast, Pickering has worked hard to develop responsibly, putting in place a number of planning practices to restrict development near its many natural gems, such as Frenchman's Bay, Bruce Handscombe Park, and the waterfront trail along Lake Ontario. In fact, beautiful natural areas are one of Pickering's hallmarks. Rouge Park, for example, is the largest natural environment park in an urban area in all of North America. There, you'll find fabulous hiking, an amazing array of wildlife, and canoeing on the Rouge River. Lake Ontario is Pickering's other big asset. The city has several marinas in which to dock your boat – however big or small it may be.

For shopping, check out Pickering Town Centre, a full-service mall with over 200 stores. Still, when the big city cries out for you, just hop on the GO Train to downtown Toronto.
