Plymouth, Massachusetts

Looking for American history and colonial charm? Look at Plymouth! As everyone will remember from history class, it is the site of the Mayflower landing of 1620, and is the site of the first permanent English settlement in New England. Thanks to this long history, this coastal community of 7,658 is able to promote itself as "America's Hometown"! Plymouth is located 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Boston and 44 miles (71 kilometers) east of Providence, Rhode Island.

New residents and visitors can explore local history at places like Plimoth Plantation, a recreated 1627 Pilgrim village and Native Wampanoag homesite; the Alden House Museum, whose original structure is said to have been built in 1653, and is the only standing structure in which original Pilgrims are known to have lived; the Pilgrim Hall Museum, which contains artifacts owned by the Pilgrims and local Native Americans; and Burial Hill, the last resting place of some of the area's first settlers. (And of course, there are many more historical sites to see, in and around Plymouth, and one could simply just stroll historic downtown Plymouth!)

When residents have had enough history, and want to head outdoors, they have several options. Plymouth is, of course, right along the coast, so residents can enjoy the local beaches. Residents also have easy access to beautiful Cape Cod National Seashore, which can be reached via ferry, which travels across Cape Cod Bay to Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod, or by following the 55-mile (89-kilometer) road route. And Myles Standish State Forest is just outside of town.
