Port Coquitlam, British Columbia

The city of Port Coquitlam is located in British Columbia's Lower Mainland region, about 32 kilometers (20 miles) east of downtown Vancouver, at the confluence of the Fraser, Pitt, and Coquitlam rivers. The city is perhaps best known in Canada as the hometown of Terry Fox.

First settled in the 1860s, Port Coquitlam was incorporated in 1913, and is today part of a bustling tri-city area that includes the communities of Port Moody and Coquitlam.

Downtown Port Coquitlam is centered on its historic City Hall, a heritage site that dates to 1914. The city's main thoroughfare is Shaughnessy Street, which is a beautiful, tree-lined street that is home to a variety of shops and restaurants.

The city offers residents a range of community services, and in-town recreation via the Hyde Creek Centre. Also in town is the PoCo Trail, a 25-kilometer (16-mile) hiking trail that runs along Port Coquitlam's perimeter. And golfers will want to take note of the city's 18-hole Carnoustie Golf & Country Club.

Port Coquitlam is set in an area that is outstanding for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Whether you are looking to fish for salmon in the Coquitlam River, want a quiet day of bird watching at Burrard Inlet, or want to go for a brisk hike in the mountains, it's all available at your door. And there are numerous provincial parks nearby, including Golden Ears and Pinecone Burke. And don't forget – Whistler is only about 150 kilometers (93 miles) north!
