The 10 kilometers (six miles) of white-sand beach on Lake Huron is the focal point of this cheerful town of 6,766. Once thought to be medicinal, the clear blue water of the Huron stays warm and shallow thanks to its many sandbars. And if you're not into just laying back and relaxing, the beach is always busy! There is a Flea Market every Wednesday, with its hundred or so vendors hawking their wares – proceeds from the Flea Market go back into the community, providing new equipment and facilities for the town. When the Flea Market is closed, check out the beach carnival that runs four days a week. And on Sundays, the bandshell comes alive with local bands.

Beyond the beach, Port Elgin is home to the award-winning Pumpkinfest. Enticing 55,000 visitors per year, there's the international weigh-in for the largest pumpkin, a lineup of classic cars along Port Elgin's main streets, and an underwater pumpkin-carving event. And, of course, there's plenty of fun for the kids, too – just make sure you're not standing in the wrong spot during the seed-spitting contest!
