Port Moody, British Columbia

Port Moody is one of three cities (the other two being Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam) that make up the Tri-Cities Area in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia.

If you're someone who wants it all – small-town charm, colorful history, big-city comforts, and lots of natural resources – Port Moody (population about 23,816) is the place for you because, here, it's all about location! Nestled in a lush, natural setting at the base of Eagle Mountain and on the shores of the Burrard Inlet, Port Moody is only 30 minutes away from Vancouver (the largest city in British Columbia) and only 45 minutes away from the US border.

With such a spectacular natural location, there is plenty to do outdoors. From hiking along forested mountain trails to boating in Sasamat Lake to strolling along the pier in Rocky Point Park. If you're lucky, you just might catch a glimpse of a cougar or black bear. Or, if you're really lucky, you might sight Port Moody's rarest beast, the wolverine, which was last spotted (the last time we know of) checking out cars on Clarke Street.

But if all this talk of beasts has frightened you, don't worry … there's plenty to do that has nothing to do with nature. You could check out the local talent at The Port Moody Arts Centre – formerly the Old City Hall, this 1913 building now houses studios and art galleries. Or you could learn more about the city's proud history as the most western terminus on the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway with a visit to the Port Moody Station Museum. Or, you can get a little more hands-on during the Golden Spike Days Festival – there's nothing more hands-on than pumping a handcar along a railway track! But, for me, the biggest draw to Port Moody is the West Coast Chocolate Festival! This yummy festival features tastings and a chocolate carnival!

Port Moody … good things with chocolate on top.
