Port Perry, Ontario

An idyllic, rural nook, Port Perry has lakeside vistas, casino excitement, and attractive, tree-lined streets.

About an hour's drive northeast of Toronto, Port Perry is part of the larger Township of Scugog. With a population of about 7,244, it's the largest center in Scugog. The township gets its name from the scenic Lake Scugog, which has a waterfront that makes downtown Port Perry sparkle.

Port Perry has a long and colorful history. Its founder, Peter Perry, was a member of Ontario's legislature and was responsible for pushing through reform laws in the 19th century, such as the use of secret ballots in elections and the end of imprisonment for debts. There are also a few ghost legends that have survived generations. It is said, for example, that since the death of a young man in a car accident in the 1950s, several people have spotted a phantom car headlight crossing the spot where the tragedy occurred. Of course, as inevitably happens in small-town environments, there are numerous variations on the story.

While history is the thrust of Port Perry's charm, there's plenty of modern-day excitement, too. For a natural getaway, try a hike through the woods or canoe through the many beautiful wetland areas. For those who prefer finer charms, check out the excellent shopping in the downtown district, or enjoy a play or concert at the old Town Hall building. Those with some extra cash can enjoy the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino, a full-service gaming spot offering great food and entertainment.

Port Perry offers a quality of life few places can match. The pace is a bit slower than in the rest of the Toronto area, making it a great place to enjoy life's pleasures.
