The city of Portage La Prairie is located along the banks of the Assiniboine River, 85 kilometers (53 miles) west of Winnipeg, in the central plains area of Manitoba. The city draws equally on the agriculture industry and on tourism to drive the local economy. The history of Portage la Prairie can be traced back to 1738, when the French-Canadian explorer, Pierre Gaultier de la Vérendrye, established a fur trading post to explore the surrounding region. A replica of la Vérendrye's fort, along with exhibits dedicated to the city's history, can be visited at the Fort la Reine Museum and Pioneer Village. Also located in Portage la Prairie is the Craig Media Gallery, an art gallery dedicated to the city's cultural heritage. The center of Portage la Prairie is dominated by the city's scenic Island Park. This "Island in the City" is Portage la Prairie's recreational hub and includes an arboretum, playgrounds, trails for walking, biking, and roller-blading, and an 18-hole golf course. And in the winter, the park is a great place for tobogganing and cross-country skiing. Just north of Portage la Prairie lies the Delta Marsh, one of the largest waterfowl staging areas in Manitoba. And also nearby is the St. Ambroise Beach Provincial Park, which is located on the southern shores of Lake Manitoba. See our 0 Jobs in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba Websites for this CityGovernment:
