Portland, Maine

Portland is not only Maine's largest city, but it is also the state's business, financial, and retail capital. Not bad for a city that can trace its history back to 1633, and that has been destroyed a total of four times since.

With one of the few working waterfronts left in the country, much of the city's life is focussed on its port. Portland's downtown has recently gone through a period of revitalization, and its historic Old Port has become the center for these activities – peruse one of the many boutique shops or sit at a sidewalk café and soak up the atmosphere.

Just a few blocks north of Old Port you'll find the city's Arts District. With its own opera, ballet, and symphony orchestra, Portland has a lot to offer the culturally inclined. The Portland Stage Company provides a full season of theater, and if you're looking to spend a quiet afternoon at a premier art gallery, there's always the Portland Art Museum.

History will surround you in this centuries old city and Portland is home to a number of museums and attractions. The Center for Maine History Museum is definitely a must-see. And youngsters – and the young-at-heart – won't want to miss the Children's Museum of Maine.

And don't forget … the mountains of western and northern Maine are only a few hours drive away. They're just one of the reasons that Portland has a reputation as a haven for those who enjoy the outdoors. Hiking, skiing, and camping abound in one direction, and, of course, there's kayaking, boating, and deep-sea fishing in the other.

But whether you're a shopper, an art lover, a history buff, or an outdoor adventurer, everyone is certain to enjoy Portland's local cuisine – fresh lobster or clam chowder, anyone?
