Prescott, popularly known as "Everybody's Hometown," is nestled amidst the cool pines in the rock-strewn mountains of northern Arizona, 96 miles (154 kilometers) northwest of Phoenix. The city, named after the historian, William Hickling Prescott, was founded in 1863 and briefly served as territorial capital in the late 1800s. Much of Prescott's downtown commercial district was destroyed in a fire at the turn of the century, but the city's economy recovered, and today, Prescott is part of a bustling Tri-City area. Many of the more than 500 buildings in Prescott that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places were rebuilt brick by brick after the 1900 fire. The city's historic Courthouse Plaza is a testament to those efforts, as is Whiskey Row, with its vibrant shops and restaurants. A number of museums can also be found in the downtown area, such as The Phippen Museum of Western Art and The Sharlot Hall Museum (the largest museum in central territory Arizona). Nearby Prescott National Forest has 450 miles (724 kilometers) of scenic trails for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. The most popular of these is the Granite Mountain Wilderness Trail, about 20 minutes from the city. Also located nearby are Dead Horse Ranch State Park and Horsethief Basin Recreation Area.
