Prince Albert, Saskatchewan

The city of Prince Albert is set on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, in central Saskatchewan, approximately 142 kilometers (88 miles) northeast of Saskatoon. It is located at the edge of Saskatchewan's woodland and lakes region, and is known as the "Gateway to the North."

Exploration of the region can be traced as far back as the late 17th century, and the community itself began as a trading post in 1776. The city was eventually named Prince Albert after the son of the Prince of Wales, and incorporated in 1904. Today, the city's economy draws on the mining, forestry, and agriculture industries.

Two Canadian Prime Ministers – William Lyon Mackenzie King and John George Diefenbaker – held seats in Prince Albert before moving on to Ottawa. Wilfred Laurier also ran and won the constituency, but chose instead to represent a riding in Quebec. Other Prince Albert notables include temporary residents Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the Anne of Green Gables book series, and Boris Karloff, the star of innumerable horror films.

As might be expected of a city with that kind of pedigree, Prince Albert is home to a few museums worth noting. The Evolution of Education Museum, located in an old one-room schoolhouse, provides insight into the history of education in the province. Prince Albert's Rotary Museum of Police and Corrections is dedicated to the history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Prince Albert Historical Museum looks at the city's past, in addition to that of the surrounding region.

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to explore Prince Albert National Park, which is located 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Prince Albert. Camping is available at the park, which straddles the transition zone between the province's southern parkland and northern boreal forest. The park is also home to the only fully protected white pelican nesting colony in Canada and a free-ranging herd of plains bison.
