Prince Rupert, British Columbia

I am a nature lover. And I don't mean pretty-flowers-in-the-backyard nature; I mean full-on-fill-your-senses-gonna-get-dirty nature. If you're a nature lover like me, Prince Rupert may be the place for you.

Located on the rock ledges of Kaien Island overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this city of 14,643 is surrounded by coastal ice fields, lush rainforests, and trail-covered mountains. And what do you do when surrounded by such beauty? You take advantage of it! Fish for halibut (Prince Rupert is considered the Halibut Capital of the World). Kayak into the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, Canada's only grizzly bear sanctuary. Take the ferry to the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Camp overnight on the beach. Soak in the hot springs of the Skeena River. Helicopter to a remote trailhead. Take out a boat and look for grey whales, killer whales, and porpoises. Or better yet, get your dive gear and jump in! The ocean may be a bit chilly, but the waters here are rich with life – seals, anemones, giant Pacific octopus (the largest species in the world), and, if you're really lucky, the great humpback whale.

If you get tired of exploring the great outdoors, Prince Rupert also has a long and fascinating history to explore. Considered one of the world's oldest continuously occupied regions, the original inhabitants were Tsimshian-speaking First Nations people. You can learn about their 10,000-year-old history at the Museum of Northern BC. First Nations People have retained their culture and continue to play a large role in the community.

Once you've had a taste of what Prince Rupert has to offer – from its rich cultural history to the plethora of outdoor adventures available – you'll never want to leave.
