Named for the natives that originally lived on the banks of the local river, Puyallup means "generous people." Beyond describing its early inhabitants, Puyallup is a place that is generous to all people. Located approximately 45 minutes south of Seattle, the city has a year-round temperate climate, a beautiful view of Mount Rainier, and is in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Settled originally for the purpose of agriculture, farming still plays an important role in the economy of Puyallup. Consistent rainfall and rich soil conditions mean that almost anything will grow locally, and from berries to bulb faming, a wide variety of crops are grown. Historically speaking, hops were a major crop throughout the late 19th century, creating both an international reputation for the community and dubbing a local resident, Ezra Meeker, as the Hops King of the World. While hops are no longer a major cash crop in Puyallup, several local breweries (Big Horn and Powerhouse) pay homage to this history through micro brewing. Today, the Puyallup Valley is mostly home to a number of large-scale flower-growing operations that produce more than 15 million daffodils, six million tulips, and one million irises each year. In April, the most beautiful flowers of the region are displayed at the annual Daffodil Festival. Interested in outdoor pursuits? Puyallup's moderate climate allows residents to enjoy everything from cycling to sailing and Ultimate Frisbee™ year round. Approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) south east of Puyallup lies the picturesque Mount Rainier – an active volcano encased in ice and snow, rising over 14,000 feet (4,267 meters) about sea level. Skiing, snowshoeing, climbing, and hiking are similarly available here year round. With a population of only 33,011, Puyallup is a sleepy little town on the West Coast. Each year, however, a large influx of tourists come to the city for the Western Washington Fair (the 6th largest fair in the United States with more than 15,000 attractions. Other popular attractions include a large antique district, A Mississipi River boat casino (the Emerald Queen), the Muckleshoot Casino, numerous golf courses, and the Mansion or the city's founder, Ezra Meeker.
