Rapid City, South Dakota

Rapid City is located in western South Dakota, 171 miles (275 kilometers) west of Pierre. It is the county seat of Pennington County, and home to 59,607 people.

Situated in the beautiful Black Hills region, Rapid City offers a wealth of natural attractions. The mountains provide an ideal site for hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing, as well as rockhounding and mountain climbing. There are also 14 mountain lakes and more than 300 miles (483 kilometers) of streams, making it a haven for fishing and watersport enthusiasts. Attractions include Canyon Lake Park, with its island gazebo and numerous fishing nodes, the Black Hills Caverns, where you can see stalactites, stalagmites, and other fascinating rock formations, and the stunning Crystal Cave Park, where more than 80% of the walls and ceiling are covered with crystal formations.

Nature lovers should also drive out to the Badlands National Park, where rugged rock formations merge into the wild prairie landscape. The area has witnessed more than 11,000 years of human history, and is also one of the world's richest Oligocene epoch (23-35 million years ago) fossil sites.

For some family fun, drive through Bear Country USA to see free-roaming bears, elk, wolves, and buffalo, or visit Cosmos of the Black Hills to see fun demonstrations that seem to defy the laws of gravity.

In addition to all these natural wonders, Rapid City also offers some fine urban attractions. Culture buffs can visit the Apex Gallery to view rotating art and science exhibits, or enjoy the latest performance by the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra.

A great family attraction is the Circle B Ranch Chuckwagon Supper and Western Music Show, where you can enjoy great Western music and comedy while eating an authentic Chuckwagon supper in a barn. Rapid City also hosts some outstanding annual events, such as the Central States Fair, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and the Autumn Expedition, a five-week celebration of the city's Western heritage and culture.
