Renton, Washington

 

The city of Renton is situated on Lake Washington, just 12 miles (19 kilometers) southeast of Seattle. It is part of King County, and home to 50,052 residents.

In 1835, coal was discovered in the area, and Renton became a manufacturing base with coal mines, sawmills, and a brick factory. The city even took its name from William Renton, who was an organizer of local coal operations. Want to know more about the Renton's 100-year-long history? Visit the Renton History Museum and nearby Veterans Memorial Park. For an epicurean and historic treat rolled into one, take a ride aboard the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train. Passengers will travel in vintage rail cars from Renton to Woodinville, along the shores of Lake Washington and over the historic Wilburton Trestle. Outdoor enthusiasts will find an 18-hole golf course, more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) of trails and 30 beautiful parks in Renton. One of the most outdoor destinations is Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, which offers a fantastic swimming beach and nature trails, along with sports, boating, and fishing facilities. For bird and wildlife viewing, head to Black River Riparian Forest and Wetland, where more than 50 species can be observed in their natural habitat.
