Enjoy the picturesque beauty of Rhode Island, the Ocean State, with its Venetian-style bridges, quaint cobblestone walkways, and small-town charm. Rhode Island has its own share of quirky facts. For instance, the long-favored childhood toy Mr. Potato Head was created here by Hasbro in 1952 (and in 2000 a tourism campaign flooded the state with giant, six-foot tall Mr. and Mrs. Potato Heads created by local artists, some of which were later auctioned off for charity). Looking for a little sporting history? The island is renowned for its competitive tennis matches and boasts the oldest grass tennis courts in the US at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Wine lovers will be pleasantly surprised to hear that the state has four wineries, all of which offer tours, tastings, and an impressive selection of varietals. And with more than 400 miles (643 kilometers) of coastline (with both salt and fresh water), water sports, boating, fishing, and lying on the beach are always options for the 1,076,164 population. But, if you're a landlubber, more than 60 percent of the state is woodland and peppered with bike and hiking paths. In the winter, get out the ski gear, as one place on Rhode Island, Yawgoo Valley Ski Area, does offers ski slopes (albeit small ones) and a snow-tubing park, which are both especially suitable for children and novices. All in all, America's smallest state has a great deal to offer, and it's all presented in one very pretty package.
