Known for its large greenhouse operations, the city was once known as the Rose Capital of Canada. Legend has it, the town adopted the Duke of Richmond's motto "Like a rose, I flourish," and, therefore, became known as Richmond Hill. Richmond Hill's location just north of Toronto provides easy access and has earned the suburb the unofficial motto, "a little north, a little nicer." Located along the 401 Highway, Richmond Hill has large Chinese and Italian populations and maintains a unique cultural identity from that of neighboring communities. And thanks to its location, beyond the realm of Toronto's traffic, weekend excursions to Haliburton, Muskoka, Collingwood and Georgian Bay are easily accessible. While farmland and greenhouses still provide the community with a friendly rural atmosphere, a number of businesses have developed in the area due to affordable real estate. Major employers such as Novex, Rogers, Roxio, Epson, Compugen, and Quebecor bring a diverse range of operations to the community. As one of the fastest growing cities in Canada for several years running, further economic development is expected in the near future. Check out the write-up on Toronto, for more information.
