Located on the fall line of the James River, Richmond is a stately city, which, for whatever reason, attracts far fewer tourists than similar historic cities like Williamsburg and Charleston. Richmond is situated at the southern end of the Golden Crescent that stretches from Washington to Virginia's Tidewater area. Home to some of the best colonial architecture in the United States, a number of mouth-watering restaurants, and boutique shopping, Richmond is a city that is always looking to the future. However, it also has a storied past. Richmond lies approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Washington, DC and is a city as rich in history as the nation's capital. It was founded in 1607 and has been home to a number of important national events: Pocahontas and John Smith met in the greater Richmond area in the early 17th century; in 1775, Patrick Henry made the ground-breaking "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech at St. John's Church; in 1849, Henry Brown escaped slavery by travelling inside a box from Richmond to Philadelphia; Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy; in 1888, the first electric streetcar was introduced in Richmond; and in 1903, Maggie Lena Walker opened the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank (now Consolidated Bank & Trust) – the oldest surviving African-American-operated bank in the United States. Today, a variety of different neighborhoods offer the, now peaceful, city's 197,790 residents numerous lifestyle options. Areas such as Antebellum, and the newly restored areas of Fan and Church Hill, Jackson Ward, Oregon Hill, and Shockoe Slip are full of charming turn-of-the-first-century homes. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, the greater Richmond area has everything from farmland to riverfront properties to homes on golf courses to condominiums.
