There are two things that the people of Riverside take great pride in: oranges and history. Riverside began to grow in population, when the Brazilian Navel Orange was introduced to the area in 1871 (and as a little piece of trivia, one of the city's two original orange trees can still be found producing oranges today). Navel oranges have flourished ever since and Riverside is now home to a famous citrus industry. Just an hour east of Los Angeles, the people of Riverside have built (and preserved) some elegantly designed buildings over the years. The famous Fox Theatre, built in 1929, for instance, hosted many celebrities over the years and showed the first public screening of Gone with the Wind in 1939. Another landmark of much renown is the Mission Inn, a lavish four-star hotel, which was the locale for the marriage of the Nixons and the honeymoon of the Reagans and has hosted a number of heads of state and celebrities. The hotel provides tours of its majestic grounds. These are but some examples of the rich heritage upon which Riverside built its foundation. While preserving its past, Riverside plans to support its future. Careful planning has led to a well-developed city of 255,166 that is dynamic and progressive. With its thriving economy and gorgeous scenery in concert with a lively history and culture, Riverside is a great place to live.
