Roanoke, Virginia

Roanoke is set in western Virginia, on the Roanoke River, between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Highlands. It's approximately 187 miles (301 kilometers) west of the state capital, Richmond. The area was first explored by Europeans in the late 1600s, and by 1740, farming had begun in the area. Over the years, Roanoke has garnered quite a few awards, and as recently as 2004, it was rated "11th Best City in the US" and one of America's most livable communities!

There is plenty to enjoy outdoors in Roanoke. Golfers can visit the nine courses in the city. There are numerous city parks to enjoy. And talk about tons of tennis! – the city has 186 outdoor and 17 indoor courts.

Are you into the arts? Spend time wandering through the Art Museum of Western Virginia. Do you prefer the performing arts? Spend your evenings enjoying the work of the Roanoke Ballet Theatre, Mill Mountain Theatre, Showtimers, Opera Roanoke, or the Roanoke Symphony, to name a few.

Want some family fun? The Festival in the Park, held in late May/early June, with food, music, children's entertainment, arts and crafts, and more, is sure to be a hit. Or how about taking the family to the Mill Mountain Zoo?

Of course, one of the perks of Roanoke is the great weather. July temperatures average 86F (30C) maximum, and 64.9F (18.2C) minimum. And in January, the average maximum is 45.0F (7.2C) and average minimum 26.6F (-3C)! So in this great weather, you should get out and explore the great outdoors. A short drive away you can enjoy many state parks, including Smith Mountain Lake, Claytor Lake, Douthat, and Fairy Stone. And George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are right at your doorstep, as is access to the Appalachian Trail! And if you're just looking for a great drive, look no further than the Blue Ridge Parkway.
