While some may say Rockville is just a bedroom community for Washington, District of Columbia, there is more to Rockville than meets the eye. With a history that spans more than 250 years, Rockville is one of Maryland's oldest towns, and is home to several historically and culturally significant places. In fact, some think Rockville could be considered the birthplace of the United States – it was the location of one of the first meetings, if not the first meeting, to vie for freedom from British rule (although, at the time, it was know as Hungerford's Tavern). The town was officially named Rockville in 1801 (if you're wondering, its name stems from its location on Rock Creek), and it had a population of 200. Rockville's population has grown almost exponentially since then, and today its citizens numbers at 47,388. Beyond history, Rockville also offers great music (at the National Philharmonic Orchestra) and access to an incredible educational resource (in the form of the 150-year old National Library of Medicine located in nearby Bethesda). With all this, and, of course, easy access to the urban delights of Washington DC, you'll quickly feel at home in this quiet and friendly Victorian town.
