The southwestern Virginia town of Rocky Mount, which was founded in 1786, is the county seat of Franklin County, serving as its government, service, and business center. The town is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Roanoke and approximately 80 miles (129 kilometers) north of both Greensboro and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
