The city of Roswell is located in east central New Mexico, 173 miles (279 kilometers) west of Lubbock, Texas, and 200 miles (322 kilometers) southeast of Albuquerque. Roswell is the county seat of Chaves County, and home to 45,293 people. The city is best known for the 1947 "Roswell Incident," when a mysterious flying object crashed here. Air Force officials first described the object as a "flying disc," and later said it was a research balloon; however, speculations that the object was actually an alien spacecraft continue to the present day. Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, the International UFO Museum and Research Center is still one of Roswell's must-see attractions. Highlights include exhibits on UFO phenomenon, a gift shop, and the Alien Caffeine Espresso Bar. Roswell is also home to a number of historic and military attractions, including the Historical Center for Southeast New Mexico, General Douglas L. McBride Museum, and the Roswell Museum and Art Center. The Roswell Museum and Art Center is also home to a great collection of works by famed painters, while quality works by regional artists can be found at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art. For music lovers, the Roswell Symphony Orchestra offers an outstanding series of concerts throughout the year. Roswell is a city made for outdoor enthusiasts! Golfers have several local courses to choose from, ski enthusiasts are only an hour and a half away from Ski Apache in Ruidoso, and nature lovers have many state and national parks to explore. A particularly popular area is the Spring River corridor, which offers a golf course, bike and hike trail, and a zoo with great animal exhibits, an antique carousel, and miniature train. The nearest state park is Bottomless Lakes. The lakes seem incredibly deep due to the greenish-blue color of their waters, and provide an ideal site for boating, fishing, scuba diving, and sailing. Other parks in the area include Brantley Lake , the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and the Living Desert Zoo and Garden. Also be sure to visit the lush forests of the Lincoln National Forest, the brilliant dunes at the White Sands National Monument, and the more than 100 caves and countless rock formations found in the Carlsbad National Caverns. Offering diverse attractions from an UFO Museum to beautiful wildlife parks, Roswell is a great place to make your next home! See our 17 Jobs in Roswell, New Mexico Websites for this CityGovernment:
