Salem, New Jersey

The city of Salem is located in southern New Jersey, 16 miles (26 kilometers) southeast of Wilmington and 38 miles (61 kilometers) southwest of Philadelphia. It is the seat of Salem County, and has a population of 5,857.

The city is located on Salem Creek and near the Delaware River. The community was settled as a Quaker colony in 1675, and its name comes from the Hebrew word for "peace." To learn more about the past, visit the Salem County Historical Society Museum to see period furnishings, decorative arts, and other items related to the cultural history of the region. The Historical Society also offers guided tours of heritage buildings, educational programs, and an extensive genealogical research library.

Golfers will want to spend many summer days at the Wild Oaks Country Club, a par-36, nine-hole golf course located just outside of the city limits. The Cowtown Rodeo is on every Saturday from May to September, and features cowboys and cowgirls competing in bareback bronco riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and other exciting events.

Ready for some outdoor fun? Try fishing and boating on the Salam and Delaware rivers, or spend the day exploring one of the area's natural attractions. Mannington Meadows Wildlife Refuge is a 3,000-acre (1,214-hectare) expanse of shallow water, and attracts many paddlers and bird watchers. Many bird species winter here or use it as a rest stop during their migrations, and the lucky bird-watcher may even spot some bald eagles. Fort Mott State Park is just six miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Salem, and offers excellent trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Visitors can also wander through the old batteries of the 1896 fort, which was built in anticipation of the Spanish-American War. Fort Mott is part of the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail, which winds for 300 miles (483 kilometers) along New Jersey's shores and bays, and will take you to sandy beaches, historic villages, and many other attractions.
