Salisbury, North Carolina

Picture this: gentle streams and rivers flowing through rolling hills and rugged mountains, warm Atlantic beaches, stately Civil War-era homes, and a classy and busy downtown. You can find it all in Salisbury.

This quiet southern town of 26,462, just 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Charlotte, is rich in American history. The first European settlers arrived in the mid-1700s creating the community during one of the United States' biggest historical moments: the Revolutionary War. Salisbury's key moment, of course, was the American Civil War, and many remnants of this period are still present today, including the remains of a Confederate Prison.

Beautiful heritage buildings are everywhere in Salisbury: O.O. Rufty's General Store, built in 1905 and still in operation today, and Salisbury Station, a Spanish Mission-style building that was constructed in 1908, are two prominent 20th-century structures. Among the older structures are the town well, built in 1760, and Josephus Hall House, a grand and ornate property that was home to the chief surgeon at the Confederate Prison and which now houses the Rowan Museum. Many of Salisbury's downtown shops are splendid heritage properties. With millions of dollars in investments having been pumped into this district in recent years, it truly is a bustling commercial center.

Quality living requires lively arts and recreation, and Salisbury has plenty of both. The Meroney Theatre, home to the Piedmont Players, showcases plays and concerts throughout the year. The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra is a treat for culture buffs and provides music education programs to the area's youth. Of course, being in the South, Salisbury has a great jazz scene, and the Blues and Jazz Jam is a much-awaited event each fall.

Salisbury also has plenty of outdoor activities. Hurley Park is a gorgeous public property with woodlands, streams, and flower gardens. For more rigorous activities, try out the fantastic canoeing and rafting on the Yadkin River Trail. And, if you're looking to be a spectator, take in a game of the Kannapolis Intimidators, an affiliate team of the Chicago White Sox. If that's not enough, you'll love the moderate climate. With mild winters and warm summers, life in Salisbury is a pleasure all year round.
