Ventura, California

Ventura (aka San Buenaventura) is the county seat of Ventura County, and has its roots in Mission San Buenaventura, founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1782. You can still see the mission in the city's historic downtown district, along with museums, antique shops, numerous art galleries, and the Laurel Theatre. Visitors can learn more about the region's history at the Albinger Archaeological Museum and the Ventura County Museum of History and Art.

Ventura is situated on the beautiful California coast, and the city makes full use of its prime location. Ventura's waterfront district stretches from Seaside Park to Ventura Harbor, and includes a bustling marina, pristine beaches, and excellent surfing sites. For those who'd rather keep their feet dry, there's also a historic pier and promenade, lovely parks, and miles of scenic bike paths waiting to be explored.

Ventura Harbor Village is another great seaside attraction. Here you can board a cruise to the Channel Islands, spend the day peddle boating or kayaking, or join your kids in enjoying the carousel ride and arcade games. The Ventura County Fair, a 12-day festival that attracts more than 300,000 visitors, and features carnival rides, agricultural exhibits and fantastic entertainment. When the Fair is over, Seaside Park is still busy hosting special events ranging from trade shows to rodeos, from conferences to concerts.

The city organizes arts and cultural events throughout the year. Every Saturday in the summer, you can enjoy a live music performance as part of the Music Under the Stars series held in the Olivas Adobe Courtyard. Three times a year, the visual arts spill onto the streets in Art Walks. For kids, there are free egg hunts and entertainment on Cottontail Day, and lots of fun to be had at Cowboys, Heroes and Outlaws, a cultural festival that celebrates the region's American cowboy heritage.

With miles of uncrowded beaches, a mild year-round climate, and easy access to communities like Oxnard, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles, Ventura is a great place to live or visit.
